Color-Changing Squid Is Absolutely Mesmerizing
This color-changing squid is absolutely mesmerizing in this underwater video.
Lawrence Scheele was diving in Manly Beach, New South Wales, Australia when he crossed paths with this wavy creature and filmed this beautiful footage.
As he was diving, he noticed this southern calamari squid that was on the hunt. Once he saw that the squid was changing colors, he knew that he had to have the bright color show on film.
Squids are cephalopods, which means that they belong to a group of animals that are skilled in the art of color change. They use this unique skill to their advantage as it can come in handy when used for camouflage or to startle and warn potential predators in their underwater environment. Many of these creatures have special pigment cells called chromatophores in their skin.
These animals can also emit a cloud of purple ink when they feel threatened, and they escape while the water is opaque. It seems like this particular squid didn’t feel too threaten by the diver, since he gave him a beautiful color display to enjoy instead of a face full of ink!
The southern calamari squid is native to the oceans off the coast of Australia and New Zealand. The color of the squid is semi-transparent, but if it is caught and removed from the sea, it will soon change to an orangish-brown or rust color.
In the video, the squid can be seen rapidly changing colors from shades of white and silver to then switching to yellows and oranges. It is a stunning sight that almost looks other-worldly. It is like a waving rainbow dancing in the deep ocean.
When the footage is paired with the lovely music, the underwater scene becomes even more enchanting. It is a great reminder of how all of God’s creatures are so unique and beautiful!
