Doctor Sings To Over 8000 Babies After They Are Born

It’s become a cherished tradition at this Pittsburg hospital when one doctor sings to the newborn babies.

The birth of a child is a very special moment for any parent. After nine months of waiting, you are able to finally meet your precious baby for the first time. There is joy, happiness and probably some tears.

But one doctor is making that sacred moment even more special with his singing tradition. Dr. Carey Andrew-Jaja practices at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Magee-Womens Hospital.

For the past 40 years, he’s made it his trademark to sing to each newborn that he delivers. All together, he’s helped welcome 8,000 babies into this world and there have been many serenades along the way.

But now, it’s time for Dr. Jaja to retire and the community is honoring this incredible man with his own "Jaja Day." The city of Pittsburg recently declared May 16th to be "Jaja Day" after the infamous singing doctor.

When asked about the motive behind his serenades, Dr. Jaja said "Childbirth is very stressful for the patient and their family. Therefore, we as caregivers must strive to provide excellent care in an excellent setting with a smile on our face and a song in our heart.”

He’s used songs such as “Happy Birthday” and “What A Wonderful World” for the babies and it always garners a beautiful response. This man’s positive attitude and contagious energy will be missed among the staff. But his legacy of patient care and kindness will continue to remain after his retirement.
