Dying Man Granted Final Wish To Be Baptized After Lifetime Of Atheism

A dying man was baptized in front of his family just days before passing away.

Thomas Roberts was a lifelong atheist. But he had a huge change of heart after reaching the final stages of lung cancer. Thomas was a patient at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital when he requested a fully submerged water baptism.

Because Thomas is in a wheelchair and dependent on oxygen, this final wish was a major undertaking. But, the team at the hospital didn’t let anything stop them from helping this man hand his life over to God. Surrounded by his family and a team of caregivers, Thomas was lowered into the pool at the rehabilitation center and removed from oxygen for just a few moments.

Corey Agricola is the chaplain at the hospital and helped this incredible moment come to life. “I have served in the ministry over 20 years and seven of those at UAB. This is the greatest day of my career.” Before the baptism, the chaplain said, “Thomas, you never thought you would preach a sermon in your life; but you preached today. You made an impact on people who you do not even know.”

Thomas’ family was overwhelmed with the baptism. Gina Gibson, Thomas’ sister said, “It brings me complete comfort and peace because I know where he is going now. I don’t have to worry about it. Now there will be great joy just knowing where he is going. He is at peace. He was born again. You could see that on his face after the baptism. He was born again.”

Just a few days later, Thomas lost his battle to cancer. But we can all rest easy knowing that He is pain-free in Heaven.
