Head Above Water' Official Music Video by Avril Lavigne

Singer / Songwriter Avril Lavigne has returned to the music industry after a five year medically-forced hiatus due to Lyme Disease. In this unexpected song from the 34-year-old Canadian singer, Avril delves deep into her faith and begs God to sustain her in her darkest moment.

Lavigne shares that her battle with Lyme had gotten so severe she truly thought that she was going to die. It was there that she found a renewed moment of faith and a new song of encouragement for herself and others.

“I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.”

“Head Above Water” is a piano ballad that allows the lyrics to shine through in a beautiful story. It is such a personal song and for those fighting battles, so easy to connect with the message. Sometimes it truly comes down to realizing that at the end of the fight, only God can step in and save us. Lavigne pens this stunningly in the chorus:

“God, keep my head above water
Don't let me drown, it gets harder
I'll meet you there at the altar
As I fall down to my knees
Don't let me drown, drown, drown”

Avril wore a flowing white gown for the video and is seen walking through a vast shoreline in a very gloomy atmosphere. As she sings,

“So pull me up from down below
'Cause I'm underneath the undertow
Come dry me off and hold me close
I need you now, I need you most” the scenery changes to sunlight breaking through the clouds.

What a beautiful visual of the Father seeking us out when we call on Him!
