We love hearing traditional gospel hymns in a new way! This jazzed up version of “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” adds a new interest to the song without losing the original content.

The version of the hymn that we know today was birthed in 1940. But there is a lot of stipulation over who truly penned the song. We do know that the early version of the chorus was passed down as a spiritual through the African American churches prior to 1940. It is also very similar to several hymns that were being sung as early as the Civil War. But the message of all the versions is quite clear – there is hope when we walk side by side with Jesus.

The group “Hi-Key Records” is a relatively new pairing. On their social media page the group describes themselves, “Brilliant Soviet background but raised in USA minds, came together to create beautiful modern and unheard sound with a sprinkle of old school flavor.” It’s clear these young musicians all have the same passion – to use their talents in song for the Lord!

Filming on a simple alley wall, the group acoustically conquers this gospel favorite in a 1930s-style arrangement. The traditional jazz band instruments lend themselves perfectly to this encouraging hymn. When the song broke into the acapella verse, we were pleasantly surprised by their tight harmonies.

It’s clear this group love praising the Lord in their unique styling. We hope to hear a lot more from them in the future!
