Softly and Tenderly' Hymn Is The Calm We All Need

Published In Music

This peaceful video of two students from a Christian high school in Canada performing the hymn ‘Softly and Tenderly’ is just what we need right now.

“Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, calling for you and for me
See on the portals He's waiting and watching, watching for you and for me
Come home, come home, ye who are weary come home
Earnestly, tenderly Jesus is calling, calling, ‘O sinner come home’”

What a calm and peaceful video. And such a lovely setting for this wonderful song! The young woman is beautifully singing ‘Softly and Tenderly’ by a campfire while a young man is playing the guitar right beside her. Both of these Fountainview Academy students are so talented and have a strong love for the Lord.

“The young lady has a beautiful voice,” comments one person on the YouTube video. “This is much like a lullaby version of this song. God bless you young students!”

“I love her voice, love this version,” writes another person. “Touches my very soul. Great job! Praise the Lord.”

‘Softly and Tenderly’ is a classic hymn from the 19th century, and it was written by Will Lamartine Thompson. He was a composer of gospel, secular, and patriotic songs. When his songs were rejected by publishers of his day, he formed his own music publishing company. By the 1880s, the company expanded beyond publishing music and sold pianos, organs, and other instruments and supplies.

The hymn ‘Softly and Tenderly’ has been recorded by numerous artists throughout the years, and it was also used during the memorial service for Martin Luther King Jr. on April 8, 1968.

May this song uplift you today, and let it remind you of the Lord’s amazing love for us. He is wonderful, marvelous, and so good to us. Let us praise His name with song!
